Hurricane Georges left a trail of
destruction as it swept through the
Caribbean, the Florida Keys and into the central Gulf Coast of
Mississippi making landfall at Ocean Springs, between Biloxi
and Pascagoula.
125 mph wind gust recorded at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi.
A gust of 172 mph was also recorded, but dual wind observations
being taken by Doppler-On-Wheels near the Air Force Base recorded
a wind gust of only 123 mph. Storm surge was estimated at 10 feet.
Airports and highways closed, curfews imposed, flash-flood
warnings issued.
Throughout the region about 1 1/2 million people had been advised to
leave their homes. Red Cross sheltered 9,000 people.
Over 230,000 people where left without power
for weeks.
