Bo Diddley headlines hurricane relief concert in Fla. Keys

ISLAMORADA, Fla. For Bo Diddley, a concert in Islamorada was all about love.

The blues legend and his rectangular, cigar box guitar joined saxophonist Clarence Clemons of the
E- Street Band, former Sly and the Family Stone lead singer E-Jaye Brown and local bands for a concert yesterday to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims in Mississippi.

Some of Diddley's own family members had to be evacuated from the Gulf Coast because of Katrina.

The musician says he hoped the concert would raise some money to help other people devastated by the hurricane.

Yesterday's concert was originally scheduled for October 23rd, but was postponed because of Hurricane Wilma.

The city of Islamorada has recently adopted Ocean Springs, Mississippi, as its sister city.

Message from Mayor Bob Johnson, Islamorada Florida;

Thank you so much for your thoughts and concerns.

Islamorada faired okay, some tree damage, some bayside surge damage but little structural damage. Since this is our fourth storm in 90 days I feel that it's safe to say our community has become "hurricane-hardened" and weary of cleaning up debris. I also believe it is safe to say that even with the storms we've experienced there is no comparison to the catastrophic destruction in Ocean Springs.

I believe the fund raiser is still on, rescheduled now for December 4th, unless of course we have another storm. And by the way, most folks here have embraced the sister-city concept and believe it will transcend hurricanes and their seasons. From our hearts, Islamorada wishes only the best for Ocean Springs.

Mayor Bob Johnson

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FLORIDA KEYS FOR KATRINA RELIEF BENEFITING OUR SISTER-CITY
OF OCEAN SPRINGS, MS ISLAMORADA FOUNDER’S PARK
(ORIGINALLY SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 23, 2005)

POSTPONED DUE TO HURRICANE WILMA DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED

October 28, 2005
Islamorada, Florida Keys
Eileen McGuire, Event Coordinator, 305-664-2321

Hurricane Wilma, responsible for extensive flooding and damage in the Florida Keys, forces continued postponement of island fundraiser benefiting sister-city of Ocean Springs, MS.

Much to the dismay of a dedicated group of organizers and a community poised to provide financial relief to a storm ravaged community, the Florida Keys For Katrina Relief effort is, once again, forced to seek an alternative date due to the affects of Hurricane Wilma.

FKFKR is a concept first proposed by Capt. Jimmy Lozar of Islamorada to aid a city similar in proportions to a typical Key’s town suffering extensive damage from Hurricane Katrina in August. The city of Ocean Springs, MS got the nod from a selection committee of community and business leaders and the effort was underway.

Major sponsors came on board including presenting sponsors Cay Clubs International, Caribee Boat Sales and Marina, Holiday Isle Resort, William Fountain Properties, Inc., Islamorada Fishing Club, Rotary Club of Key Largo and TIB Bank.

Now, ironically, Keys residents are faced with their own hurricane headaches and the logistics of a fundraiser for both areas has event organizers looking for an alternate date to attract the best national and local talent available and provide an opportunity for optimum fundraising.

According to Eileen McGuire, Event Coordinator, "With an understanding for the problems faced by many of our neighbors and considering the lack of services and infrastructure on the mainland, it would be inappropriate and ineffective for us to conduct a fundraiser of any significance at this time. A proposed alternate date of December 4, 2005 simply does not afford sufficient time to reorganize the event while dealing with storm damage issues."

"Our sponsors and our committee members are steadfast in their support and we will work hard to find a date for the concert portion of our fundraising efforts, not only for Ocean Springs, MS but also for the Florida Keys severely impacted by Hurricane Wilma." That date depends on just how fast Islamorada’s Founder’s Park is able to recover from extensive storm surge flooding of the event property and the Village’s headquarters and municipal building.

In the face of multiple postponements McGuire had this to say, "Keys residents have many challenges that face them and a history of overcoming every one of them. That’s the kind of spirit that made we want to live here. We will have a concert. It will benefit Ocean Springs, MS and the Florida Keys and you know what? It will be bigger and better than anything we originally planned because that’s the way we do it in the Keys!"

Eileen suggested that persons interested in supporting the relief effort can make financial donations at any TIB Bank location. You can visit the event web site at www.reelllifeart.com and commemorative posters and t-shirts featuring the artwork of noted artist Pasta Pantaleo are on sale at all TIB Bank locations and on E-Bay … Florida Keys For Katrina Relief. Coral Shores High School INTERACT students continue to sell Mardi Gras beads throughout the community to raise funds.

Hurricane postpones Katrina benefit
October 27, 2005

ISLAMORADA — With Hurricane Wilma pointing catastrophic winds toward  the Keys last week, organizers postponed a benefit concert for, of all things, hurricane relief.

Florida Keys for Katrina Relief was set for Sunday, Oct. 23 at Islamorada's Founders Park. It was to be headlined by blues guitarist Bo Diddley and saxophonist Clarence Clemons, formerly of Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band. Proceeds from the concert were to go to Ocean Springs, Miss., population 17,000, located just across the Biloxi Bay from its larger and more famous neighbor.

Now Ocean Springs will have to wait to get that money — at least for a little while.

According to Eileen McGuire, a spokesperson for the event, organizers have now set a target concert date of Dec. 4.

And there may be some good news. McGuire said that reporter Jim Cantore of The Weather Channel has expressed an interest in getting the event broadcast by his employer.

"The possibility exists that it could be live or they could tape it," McGuire said. "That's what is in the works, but it is not confirmed yet. Out of a black cloud comes a silver lining. Instead of $100,000 maybe we can make $200,000."

Event treasurer Kym Collins was out of town and could not be reached for an estimate on how much money Florida Keys for Katrina Relief has raised so far, but Bill Kelly, an event organizer said major donations alone have tallied at least $40,000, though some of that money would go toward expenses.

"The goal was to raise over $100,000, and I think we are on track to do that quite easily," Kelly said.

Last Wednesday in Ocean Springs, officials expressed both gratitude for the efforts being made on their behalf and concern for what the Keys were facing. Mayor Connie Moran and administrative assistant Sue Ray were scheduled to attend the event, where they would have received a key to Islamorada from village Mayor Bob Johnson.

"We are thrilled out of our minds," Ray of the fact that concert organizers designated Ocean Springs as the beneficiary of the relief effort. "Everybody down there has been extremely nice. It has been overwhelming. But right now we need to pray that you all will be safe."

According Julia Weaver, Ocean Springs' alderman-at-large, the town lost 700 rooftops to Katrina. Ocean Springs' historic district took an especially hard hit, with many of the beachfront homes built by industrial magnates having been decimated in the storm. The economy of the town has been further impacted by the closure of nearby casinos in Biloxi, where many Ocean Springs residents worked.

On a quirkier note, Weaver explained that while the Ocean Springs library survived the storm, the popular items in its collection were mostly lost because they were checked out to homes that were destroyed.

"If you want a title from 1935 you can get it," she said. "But if you want Harry Potter, you are out of luck."

Replenishing the library collection is one of the options Ocean Springs policy makers are considering for the use of Florida Keys for Katrina Relief proceeds. Other possibilities, Weaver said, include hiring an architect to consult on rebuilding the historic district, leveraging the money for wetlands restoration and hiring an arborist to restore the town's canopy of live oaks.

But with Wilma bearing down on South Florida, Weaver said Ocean Springs had begun contemplating other things.

"We are actually thinking that if something happens to you maybe we'd have to think about providing aid to a South Florida town," she said last Wednesday. "We realize that all of us in the coastal regions must be ready to accept help when necessary and provide help when needed."

Hurricane Wilma, a category five storm, forces postponement of fundraising event

Early Wednesday morning, after a briefing by emergency management personnel from Monroe County and the Village of Islamorada, Eileen McGuire, Event Coordinator, announced the postponement of FLORIDA KEYS FOR KATRINA RELIEF scheduled for this coming Sunday, October 23rd at Islamorada’s Founder’s Park due to the threat of Hurricane Wilma.

McGuire stated, "At this time an alternate date has not been selected. It will take time to reschedule both local and national acts and co-ordinate all of the support groups necessary to make an event like this happen. And we have no idea how much impact there may be on the Florida Keys and our own area infrastructure."

"Our sponsors remain committed and our fundraising efforts will continue. The only thing on "hold" is the date of our event. T-shirts and commemorative posters featuring the artwork of Pasta Pantaleo remain on sale at all TIB Bank locations and the students of Coral Shores High School’s INTERACT group will continue to market Mardi Gras beads to those wishing to donate."

McGuire also had this to say, "I really want to thank everyone for their intense efforts to bring this fundraiser to fruition. Our committees will regroup following the passing of Hurricane Wilma and barring any devastation in our own community do everything we can to bring FLORIDA KEYS FOR KATRINA RELIEF to a successful conclusion. Our next meeting is scheduled for October 27, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at the Horizon Room at Holiday Isle Resort to assess everything and select a date to complete the fundraising effort."

FLORIDA KEYS FOR KATRINA RELIEF was an idea born just six weeks ago by Jimmy Lozar. With the aid and support of local businesses, community leaders and volunteers this enormous fund raising effort took shape to aid sister-city Ocean Springs, MS, itself destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in August.

Major sponsors are Cay Clubs International, Caribee Boat Sales and Marina, Holiday Isle Resort, William Fountain Properties, Inc, Islamorada Fishing Club, Rotary Club of Key Largo and TIB Bank.

Mayor Connie Moran and several other community leaders from Ocean Springs, MS were scheduled to arrive in Islamorada for the fundraiser. Mayor Bob Johnson was expected to present them with "Keys To The Village" and the group planned a weekend of fundraising activities and business discussions to aid the stricken town. Now, all of that will have to wait pending the path and intensity of Hurricane Wilma.
